What Is A Lan Cable

Jul 18, 2024

LAN stands for Local Area Network. It is often used interchangeably with Ethernet. LAN cables provide networking for multiple computers over a short distance (e.g. 1m - 100m) and are designed to transfer resources such as file sharing, gaming, email, and printer sharing. This probably sums up the best definition of LAN cables.

A typical Ethernet LAN cable looks like a telephone cord with a modular connector on the end. It consists of 4 pairs of twisted wires. LAN cables are usually connected to a hub, switch, or router on one end and to your device (e.g. laptop or computer) on the other end.

LAN cables are used to connect to the internet stably, and internet connections are used for everything! Sharing and transferring files and information would never be better without a wired high-speed DSL connection. LAN cables have a wide range of uses in router connections, printers, telecommunications, voice and data transmission, workstations, and gaming interconnects.

LAN cables consist of twisted pairs of wires, and the role of each pair is to eliminate EMI or electromagnetic interference and external interference. The cable is terminated with an 8P8C modular connector (RJ45) for short-distance patching. Bulk cables are used for longer distance installations and structured wiring.
